Carnival: "Pagan Crone"

My entry for this month's theme of Carnival. I was initially inspired by the Carny-Ville perfomaning arts event that Sorrel and I are going to. Jugglers, acrobats, stilt walkers and paedophiles stalk around dressed up like Papa Lazarou and creating a terrifying and twisted funfair. Unfortunatly, our tickets arent until the weekend, so I couldnt do any direct sketching for this entry. So my idea gradually turned into a Pagan thing, and Pagans favourite pastime; burning policemen alive.

And here's the line art:

  1. Good stuff! Nice focal point with the foreground figure and a secondary in the background. I like the silhouette of the policeman in the sketch, perhaps you could subtly hint that in the painting. Would be a nice extra detail. Good work!

  2. Freeky-the sinisterness really shines through. I think the cast shadow from the dancers works really well. With the colours I think there is a bit too much saturation throughout the image, and that the crone could have been pushed even furthur with just a rim light to show the silhouette. I think if you played with having the fire really saturated, but the other areas darker/less saturated, you might have had a nice range that drew you in and had a focal point:)

  3. Really nice adam, i think you made a slightly awkward crop on the final and ended up a bit more squashed than the sketch. I really like your dark theme though and you gestures on the girls have great movement.
